The Origins of Keowee Bowmen

The Keowee Bowmen Archery Club has a proud history rooted in dedication, hard work, and a love for the sport of archery.

In 1967, members of the former Oconee Archery Club found themselves without a home after their leased property in Bounty Land, just north of Seneca, was sold. Determined not to lose the sport they loved, the group set out to find land they could truly call their own. That search led to a 30-acre tract that would become the permanent home of Keowee Bowmen.

Financing the purchase wasn’t easy. The club raffled off a jon boat, applied for a federal recreational loan through the Farmers Home Administration, and rallied members to contribute labor and expertise. By 1968, the loan was approved, construction was underway, and with the help of dedicated volunteers, the clubhouse and three ranges were completed in time for the first Southeastern tournament.

Over the years, Keowee Bowmen has hosted countless regional and national events, including the 1977 NFAA Field Archery National Championships, which welcomed over 1,000 archers and legendary guest speaker Fred Bear. Members, families, and local supporters all pitched in—building ranges, running concessions, and creating memories that would last a lifetime.

The contributions of women in the club have been equally vital, from organizing tournaments to keeping archers and workers fed during long events. Their dedication and hospitality remain a cornerstone of the Keowee Bowmen legacy.

On February 2, 2001, a milestone was reached: the club officially paid off its 40-year loan, years ahead of schedule, thanks in part to timber sales from the property. Few archery clubs in the country can say they own their land outright—an accomplishment that reflects the perseverance and vision of the original members.

Today, Keowee Bowmen continues to thrive as a community of archers committed to preserving the sport, improving the facilities, and carrying forward the legacy of those who came before us.
